Our top 10 Summer activities for the Cariboo

TOP-10-SUMMER-ACTIVITIES-FOR-THE-CARIBOO.jpg

In 2015 Joel and I moved from London, England to the beautiful, (and in comparison) wild Cariboo. Canada’s home for me but for a minute there Joel was like a deer in headlights as we got into the rhythm of our new home. We spent a lot of time pining away for all things English. But soon enough, we got down to business figuring out everything the Cariboo has to offer. We’ve spent the last 4 years scouring all the places to go, things to see and food to eat and, ta-da!!!!! Here is our top ten SUMMER EDITION!!! It’s not in any order. They’re all equally amazing ;)

  1. Soda Creek Corn: I love the days that we visit this place. It’s a bit of a drive for us 100 Mileians (is that what we’re called?), but gosh darn it! It’s worth it. Don’t worry about packing a lunch coz you can eat as much free corn as you want, right there in the fields. Did you ever think you’d love raw corn? Me neither. But this stuff’s amahhhhzing! Pick 20 bags and freeze them when you get home. You’re welcome. They also have a HUGE garden patch, so visit them as soon as summer hits.

  2. Blue Lake: While you’re up in the Soda Creek area, swing by Blue Lake. It’s practically across the road and it feels like nobody knows about it! It’s so secluded and perfect for a splash around. You can even have a campfire (except during fire bans!!) and roast some of that corn you picked. If you have a canoe, major bonus points, and also, can I come?

  3. The walking trails at the 108 Ranch: This place is the greatest for nature walks. When I was SUPER pregnant we had the idea to walk around the whole 108 lake. What should have been a gorgeous 1.5-2 hour walk turned into what felt like 7 hours. In the end I was limping along and begging for ice cream. But for normal people it’s amazing!

  4. Canim Lake Beach: I loooove this place! It’s one of the only places we’ve found where you can have your own kind of semi-private beach. Perfect for getting out the giant swan and having a float. Picnics are mandatory. Bring Twizzlers.

  5. Trail Rides at the 108: FUN FUN FUN, especially if you have people visiting from out of town. When we got married we did this with friends visiting for our wedding. You should have seen the Londoners on those horses. It was chaos!!!

  6. Go for a Drive with an ice cream from DQ: Hands down one of our favourite things to do after yard work on a Sunday. There are so many great back roads to explore! Windows down, music up, hair blowing into your ice cream. It’s divine!

  7. The Iron Horse Pub in Lone Butte: Don’t even get me started on their appies! SO good! And their wings- best in town. We were there almost every Wednesday for wings night before we had the baby. But soon the baby will learn to enjoy the beauty of wings night and we’ll be baaaaack!

  8. Climb Lone Butte: While you’re kickin' around Lone Butte, head on over to the ACTUAL butte, don your hiking boots and climb to the top. It takes about 15ish minutes and the view is AMAAAAAZING! You’ve got to do this at least once.

  9. Take a drive out to Mahood Falls: It’s a long drive but a short hike at the end and, wowsers, you’re amongst some of the most amazing waterfalls in BC!

  10. Campfires campfires campfires: One of my personal faves. If you don’t have a fire pit at you place, you don’t have to go far to find one. Bring food and get ready to have great conversation until the stars come out. Just watch those fire bans! We’ve got to protect our Cariboo :)

So hit me up for details or hand-drawn maps! And share with me what YOUR favourite Cariboo summer adventures look like. I’d like this list to grow!

About Sallee

I was born in the Yukon, brought up in BC and Alberta and lived in Australia, New Zealand and England. Even though the places and scenery have changed over the years, one thing has always stayed the same. Home is where your heart is. Putting a price tag on something as personal as a home can feel overwhelming. That's why for me as a REALTOR®, selling houses is much more than numbers. It's about people. Wherever you are in the world, in life or on your journey with real estate, these relationships matter.
